Tidy assemblies, bills of materials and variants

Bills of materials to Excel, assembly variants with their mass, coding of every file and what a change affects. Without breaking a single reference.

Real examples

Ask it like this

Every example is a real task done with Vega in SOLIDWORKS. Copy the request and try it with your own parts.

  • Assembly bill of materials to Excel

Vega exports the indented bill of materials of the open assembly to Excel, with its subassemblies and their parts by level: item number, file, description, material, quantity and mass. It flags the parts without a material, because their mass is not real, and does not save the assembly.

    Request

Export the bill of materials of the open assembly to Excel, indented, with item number, file name, description, material, quantity and mass.

  • Conveyor variants by width

Vega finds the dimensions of the conveyor's parts that depend on the width (belt, cross members, half cross members and drums) and creates the assembly's three configurations with those of each part. It checks that they rebuild and leaves an HTML report of each variant with the changed dimensions, without saving the model.

    Request

The open conveyor is 1800 mm wide between profiles. Create the configurations ANCHO_2100, ANCHO_1500 and ANCHO_1200 adjusting the dimensions that depend on the width, check that all three rebuild correctly and make a report of each configuration with the changed dimensions.

  • Where a part is used and what a change affects

Without changing anything, Vega finds which assemblies use the hopper's PLACA CIERRE, which drawings would be affected if its thickness changed and whether any drawing of the assembly is out of date, and sums it up in a PDF report.

    Request

Without changing anything, tell me where the part PLACA CIERRE of the open assembly is used, which drawings would be affected if its thickness changed and whether any drawing of the assembly is out of date, and make me a PDF report with the result.

  • Complete workbench: frame, sheet metal and fasteners

Vega designs from scratch the welded frame with its legs, foot plates and tapped holes, the sheet-metal tray with its flanges, holes and cut-out, and builds the assembly with the tray in place and a Toolbox screw in each hole.

    Request

Design a bolted workbench from scratch: a welded frame in 40x40x4 tube of 800 x 500 x 750 mm, a 1.5 mm stainless sheet-metal tray that wraps the frame, and the assembly with four ISO 7380 M6 screws from Toolbox.

    See the full request

You are going to design from scratch a workbench with its bolted tray. 1. Frame. BASTIDOR.SLDPRT, a weldment in S275JR steel with 40x40x4 square tube: - Outer size of 800 x 500 mm in plan and 750 mm total height, including the foot plates. - Top frame with mitred joints at the four corners. - Four vertical legs at the corners, trimmed against the top frame. - Bottom frame between the legs, with its underside 150 mm above the floor and butted against the legs. - An 80 x 80 x 8 mm foot plate centred under each leg. - Four M6 tapped through holes on the top face of the two 800 mm side members, centred on the tube width and 100 mm from each outer end. 2. Tray. BANDEJA.SLDPRT, a sheet-metal part in AISI 304 stainless steel, 1.5 mm thick, with a 1.5 mm inner bend radius: - A base resting on the top frame and four 30 mm flanges pointing down that wrap the frame from outside. - Four Ø6.6 mm through holes matching the M6 tapped holes of the frame. - A centred 200 x 100 mm rectangular cut-out with R10 rounded corners for cable routing. 3. Assembly. BANCADA.SLDASM: - The frame fixed and the tray resting on the top frame, with its holes concentric with the tapped holes. - In each hole, an ISO 7380 M6 x 12 button head screw from Toolbox, with its mates. If Toolbox does not have that size generated, create it as a copy of the Toolbox part.

  • Duo-pitch truss building

Vega designs a 6 × 8 m building as a conceptual model: columns, duo-pitch trusses with their verticals and diagonals, and purlins, as reused weldments, and builds the assembly with its mates.

    Request

Design a 6 × 8 m steel-frame building from scratch: three frames with 100 × 100 tube columns and duo-pitch trusses with the ridge at 4,200 mm, five lines of purlins and the complete assembly with its mates.

    See the full request

You are going to design from scratch a small steel-frame building, without cladding or roof: its weldments and the complete assembly. 1. Sizes: - 6,000 mm wide between column axes and 8,000 mm long, with three identical frames every 4,000 mm. - Each frame has two columns and a symmetric duo-pitch truss, with the bottom chord at a height of 3,200 mm and the ridge at 4,200 mm. 2. Profiles: - Columns: square tube 100 × 100 × 4 mm. - Truss chords: rectangular tube 80 × 40 × 3 mm. - Verticals and diagonals: square tube 40 × 40 × 3 mm. - Purlins: rectangular tube 60 × 40 × 3 mm. 3. Weldments, with the tube joints trimmed: - PILAR.SLDPRT, the same for the six columns. - CERCHA.SLDPRT, the same for the three trusses: a bottom chord, two sloping top chords and verticals and diagonals spread symmetrically. - CORREA.SLDPRT, the same for every purlin. 4. Assembly. NAVE.SLDASM: - The six columns, the three trusses and five lines of purlins: one at the ridge and two on each roof slope, resting on the trusses. - One fixed part and the others placed with mates. - A different soft colour for columns, trusses and purlins, and the isometric view.

  • Bolted plates with Toolbox fasteners

Vega designs two steel plates with their holes, assembles them flush and puts a Toolbox screw, two washers and a nut in each hole, all with their mates.

    Request

Design two 250 x 150 mm S275JR steel plates (15 and 10 mm thick) with four Ø13 holes, assemble them flush and put in each hole, from Toolbox, a DIN 912 M12 x 40 screw with two washers and an M12 nut.

    See the full request

You are going to design from scratch a set of two bolted plates with Toolbox fasteners. 1. Parts, in S275JR steel: - PLACA_INFERIOR.SLDPRT: 250 x 150 x 15 mm, with 4 Ø13 mm through holes with their centres 30 mm from each edge. - PLACA_SUPERIOR.SLDPRT: 250 x 150 x 10 mm, with the same 4 holes in the same position and the four corners rounded to R15. 2. Assembly. PLACAS_ATORNILLADAS.SLDASM: - The bottom plate fixed and the top plate resting on it, with the holes concentric and the edges flush. - In each hole, from Toolbox: a DIN 912 M12 x 40 screw, a DIN 125 M12 washer under the head and another under the nut, and a DIN 934 M12 nut underneath, all with their mates. If Toolbox does not have one of these standards, use the equivalent it has, and if it does not have a size generated, create it as a copy of the Toolbox part.

Times and costs of the tasks in the videos are indicative: they depend on the size of the model and on what you ask for.

What Vega does

  • Bill of materials to Excel with the columns and properties you choose.
  • Variants of an assembly (by width, length…) as configurations, with the mass of each one.
  • Rename and code every file of the assembly and its drawings without breaking references, with the list of old and new names.
  • Where a part is used and which drawings would be affected if it changes, without opening anything.
  • Edit an assembly: add, move, fix, mate or remove components.

Shall we try it with your parts?

We'll show you Vega live, with your models and your way of working.
